Chapter 10
Aron's POV
Sable sounds panicked. I race down the stairs and come face to face with the biggest wolf I've ever seen. I don't know if it's a male or female but judging from the size of this one it's probably a male.
"Holy crap, you scared me. What's wrong and why is there a wolf in the living room?"
"This is my friend Brenin. I just found him by the lake and he's been badly wounded. I need helping cleaning up his wounds because I can't do it by myself. Don't worry I've known him for a long time and he won't hurt you unless you hurt me."
"That's good to know. What do you want me to do?"
"Grab that blanket from the couch for him to lie on. I'll go get some supplies and we'll fix him up as well as we can."
I rip the blanket from the couch and place it on the carpet. The wolf looks at me with such soulful eyes and with such pain.
"That's it Brenin, just lie on the blanket. Sable will be right back and we'll make you as comfortable as we can."
He seems to understand everything I say to him because he did exactly as I asked. Oh my gawd, he just licked my hand. That's an experience I'll be able to tell my children. Here comes Sable.
"These wounds on Brenin's back look just like the ones on my arm. They're about the same length and depth. What's going on? Why is this happening?"
Sable's POV
I can't concentrate on what Aaron is asking. "We have to fix Brenin quickly so I can go find Maebh and the pups. They won't stay in the house but we can make up a nice place for them in one of the outbuildings. As long as they can come and go by themselves they might stay until Brenin recovers."
"I'm coming with you to find them."
"No, someone needs to be here with Brenin. He probably shouldn't be left by himself. I'll be fine. Besides, they might not come if I have you with me. They don't know you and they hardly know me so I better do this alone."
"Fine, but if you're not back in two hours, Brenin or no Brenin, I'm coming to look for you."
"Maybe Willy will be back by then. There all finished. Bren, you need to lie down and stay quiet. Try to rest while I find Maebh. I'll bring her here so you can make sure she and the babes are okay. I'll be back as quickly as I can, Aron. Take care of him please."
Aron's POV
Here I am with a wounded wolf. What if he attacks me? Sable says he won't but she's not here so what do I do if he does? Oh good, his eyes are closing. I'll go get my book and I can sit on the couch and read while he sleeps. Brenin is such a beautiful animal. Who or what could have done this to him? He's whimpering and shivering. I gently put a blanket on top of him and gingerly touch the top of his head. Poor thing. Oh good, he's starting to calm down. Hopefully, he'll sleep more peacefully now.
Willy's POV
I've searched everywhere but no Brenin to be found. Wait a minute, is that him? No that wolf is too white, maybe it's his mate. "Maebh is that you? My name is Willy and I'm a friend of Sable's. I need to talk to Brenin, can you show me where he is Girl?"
There are the pups over by the bushes. I let Maebh smell my hand. She licks it. She may smell Sable on me and that's why she's not attacking me. "Okay Girl, why don't we go search for him?" She's following me and here come the pups. "Let's go towards Sable's house, he may have gone to see her."
As we approach the house, everything is so still and quiet. Oh my gawd, what was that horrible howl. "What's the matter Maebh? Why are you so agitated? Please don't start howling too."
Aron opens the door and Maebh races into the living room. The pups quickly follow her and I bring up the rear. As Aron shuts the door behind me, I say, "What happened to Brenin? How did he get hurt?"
Aron's POV
"I don't know. Sable found him like this earlier today and now she's looking for Maebh and the pups. Where did you find them?"
"I was looking for Brenin and came across these three. I decided to bring them here rather than traipsing around the woods searching for him. Is she home yet?"
"No, but hopefully she'll return soon. I don't know what to do about the pain Brenin's in. I hate to see him like this."
